Tempe dance teacher questioned camera in changing space in emails dating to 2024

A dance teacher at Corona del Sol High School in Tempe questioned why a camera was installed in a classroom where students changed, raising concerns with administrators in 2024 and again in July 2026, according to emails obtained by local media.

The first warning came Sept. 24, 2024, the same day an assistant principal told staff that cameras had been installed and would record around the clock. The email said students would need another place to change. The teacher questioned why the camera was not positioned outside and asked that it be removed or moved, noting that students regularly changed in and out of dance gear and costumes in the room.

In July 2026, while the girls’ locker room was being renovated, the teacher again asked administrators to address the camera, requesting that it be turned off until the locker room was repaired.

A month later, Antony Cruz, 28, then a school security guard, was arrested. Police said he downloaded videos of girls changing. He faces more than 100 counts of voyeurism, according to the report.

In a later email, the teacher defended her actions, saying the incidents did not occur during school hours when she was responsible for students. She also said after-school staff had not been informed about the camera protocols. The teacher was not publicly identified. A parent recently provided a photo showing the camera covered by a cardboard box.

The emails raise questions about how the school handled concerns over surveillance in a space used for changing. The Tempe Teachers Union had been contacted for comment, according to the report; no response was included.
