Scottsdale seeks yearlong rental-license suspension after 58 shell casings found
The city is asking a court to suspend the license of a short-term rental near Roosevelt and 73rd streets for 12 months after an Oct. 11 shooting sent bullets into a neighboring home. No one was injured, but a six-month-old baby was sleeping near one bullet’s impact point.
Scottsdale is asking a court to suspend a vacation rental’s license for 12 months after an argument at the home escalated into gunfire and bullets struck a house across the street.
The rental is a single-story home near Roosevelt and 73rd streets. Court records say the shooting happened in the early hours of Oct. 11, beginning in the backyard and moving into the street. Police recovered 58 shell casings, along with three handguns, ammunition and loaded magazines from inside the home under a search warrant.
One bullet hit the wall above a front window of a neighboring home, just yards from where a six-month-old baby was sleeping. No one was injured. Scottsdale police say the investigation is continuing.
The city’s petition follows another police call at the rental on Sept. 20, when officers responded to reports of someone damaging vehicles with a hammer. Five people were arrested on suspicion of criminal trespass and other charges. Police said those arrests were not related to the reported vehicle damage; numerous people had left the area when officers arrived.
Neighbors say the incidents have shaken the area’s sense of safety. Joe Baca said he could tolerate loud music, but wanted consequences when problems arise at a rental. “You should fine them and pull their license,” he said.
Notices of the city’s court petition were posted on the home’s front door Thursday. A hearing is scheduled for next week. The property owners, who live out of state, had not responded to a request for comment.
Baca said he hopes the neighborhood can return to being “nice and quiet and peaceful.”
