A man died after Phoenix police officers shot him at an apartment complex near South 2nd Street and Sunland Avenue on Saturday, Oct. 10, according to police. The shooting happened at about 12:45 p.m., and no officers were injured. Police said officers went to the complex after receiving a report of someone walking around with a gun and a knife. As officers arrived, they learned the man had gone into an apartment. He later came outside still holding both weapons, police said. Officers issued repeated orders for him to drop the weapons and used PepperBall munitions, which police described as less-lethal. Police said the man did not comply and raised his firearm toward officers, prompting them to shoot. The man was taken to a nearby hospital in extremely critical condition and later died. Police have not released his identity or described what led up to the encounter. Officials said there are no outstanding suspects. The Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division has taken over the investigation. No further details about the shooting were provided.
