Heber storm leaves homes damaged and power out as Navajo County seeks state help

HEBER, Ariz. — State Rep. Walt Blackman called on Gov. Katie Hobbs on Wednesday, Oct. 21, to declare an emergency in Navajo County after severe weather damaged homes and knocked out power in Heber. Local authorities were still assessing the damage, and Blackman said at least one person had reportedly been injured.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the area through 7:30 p.m. The warning covered a population of about 3,500 and cited winds up to 60 mph, hail about the size of half-dollars and the possibility of a tornado. As of Wednesday night, the weather service had not confirmed a tornado touchdown; it planned to inspect the area Thursday or Friday.

Blackman asked Hobbs to evaluate an emergency declaration and make state resources available before damage assessments are complete. He said residents were without power and families had sustained significant property damage. He planned to visit Heber Thursday afternoon to meet with local leaders and survey conditions.

Blackman said his priorities include restoring electricity, clearing damaged roads, helping displaced residents and securing state assistance. Residents were urged to avoid downed power lines and damaged areas and to call 911 in an emergency.
