Gunfire at south Scottsdale rental sends bullets into nearby homes
More than 40 shots were heard in roughly 10 seconds during a gathering at a south Scottsdale short-term rental early Sunday, residents say. Police reported no injuries, but bullets struck several homes, including one where a 5-month-old was sleeping.
A burst of gunfire at a south Scottsdale short-term rental early Sunday sent bullets into nearby homes and left neighbors demanding answers about parties at the property.
Residents said an audio recording captured more than 40 shots in about 10 seconds shortly after 3:30 a.m. Sunday. Scottsdale police said no one was injured. Several homes were hit, neighbors said.
Loree Heffron, who has lived on Papago Road for nearly 25 years, said the shooting woke her. She went outside but returned home after neighbors warned that people had guns. One bullet struck a nearby home inches above a window while a 5-month-old baby was inside, Heffron said.
“That’s unacceptable,” she said.
Residents said about 25 people ran from the rental as police arrived. They said detectives told them the gathering included people ages 16 to 22, and that officers found drugs, alcohol and firearms. Police remained at the scene for hours to collect evidence, neighbors said. No arrests had been made as of Monday.
Heffron said residents have dealt with noise and fights connected to gatherings at the property, which she described as an “oasis” for parties. She said the gunfire has heightened concerns in a neighborhood where she and her late husband built close ties with neighbors.
The rental listing appeared to have been removed from Airbnb after the shooting. It was not clear whether the host or the platform took it down.
