Chandler’s 2027 utility changes could add about $6 a month for typical household

The City Council approved a 4.5% increase in solid-waste rates and tentatively backed higher water, wastewater and reclaimed-water rates. Final action on the water-related increases is scheduled for November.

CHANDLER, Ariz. — Chandler residents will pay more for solid-waste service beginning in January, and could also face higher water and wastewater bills in 2027 under rate changes considered by the City Council.

The council approved a 4.5% solid-waste rate increase Thursday. It also gave tentative approval to increases of 9% for water, 6.5% for wastewater and 9% for reclaimed water. Final approval of the water-related rates is scheduled for November.

For a household using about 10,000 gallons of water, the combined changes would mean an increase of roughly $6, according to Matt Dunbar, the city’s budget and policy director. He estimated about $3 would come from water, $2 from wastewater and $1 from solid waste.

City officials say higher operating costs, water-treatment plant upgrades and infrastructure replacements are driving the proposed increases. The changes would add to household expenses at a time when some residents say Chandler is becoming harder to afford.

Resident Michael Oei, who spoke against the proposed increases at a council meeting last week, said rising costs affect decisions about everyday spending and whether he can continue living in the city. He said the increases are factors in planning for food, transportation and housing.

The solid-waste increase has been approved and is set to take effect in January 2027. The proposed water, wastewater and reclaimed-water changes remain subject to the council’s final vote in November.
