Arizona credential portal outage stalls teacher applications and hiring checks

A weeklong outage at the state’s teacher certification system has halted application processing and left school districts unable to verify candidates. The Department of Education has not said what caused the disruption or when service will resume.

Arizona credential portal outage stalls teacher applications and hiring checks

Arizona’s teacher certification system has been offline for more than a week, holding up credential applications and preventing school districts from checking applicants’ certification status, the state Department of Education said Oct. 20.

The department has not provided a repair timeline, identified the cause or said how many educators and applicants are affected. It said its staff is working with vendors to restore the system and asked school districts for patience.

The outage affects three services: the Educator Portal used for certification applications, the School District Portal used to check applications and professional development, and the public certification search.

Kira Davis, a Valley educator who has taught middle and high school at charter schools for five years, said the disruption has stalled her effort to move to a traditional public school. She submitted certification paperwork on Oct. 5 and later found an outage notice when she checked its status.

“I have no way to prove that I have my credentials,” Davis said. She said she tried calling the department but could not get more information.

With applications not moving forward and districts unable to verify credentials through the portal, the disruption is affecting both educators seeking jobs and schools reviewing candidates. The department has not said when those services will be available again.
