At least five cars were damaged and at least seven people were identified as victims after a man allegedly threw rocks at passing drivers on State Route 74, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.
The incident happened Tuesday on the highway, also known as Carefree Highway. DPS did not specify where along the route the rocks were thrown.
Troopers arriving at the scene saw the man, who ran when he noticed them, the agency said. They pursued him and took him into custody. He was booked into jail on multiple counts of criminal damage and aggravated assault. Authorities have not released his name.
State Route 74 runs between U.S. 60 south of Wickenburg and Interstate 17 in north Phoenix. DPS warned that throwing objects at moving vehicles can cause crashes and serious injuries, and urged witnesses to report dangerous behavior to law enforcement when it is safe to do so.
