Former youth engagement director enters Philadelphia’s 2027 mayoral race
PHILADELPHIA — Shania Bennett, a former director of youth engagement in Mayor Cherelle Parker’s administration, is running for mayor in 2027, becoming the first announced challenger to the incumbent. Bennett, 26, left the administration in May. Before joining city government, she worked for state legislators and became a committee member in the 48th Ward at age 18. She said her early entry into public life gave her experience that many people gain later. Bennett has not released a detailed policy platform. She has identified addressing the underlying causes of crime — including poverty, access to jobs and education — as priorities, along with making Philadelphia a more welcoming place to do business. She also says her campaign will seek to reach younger residents through digital channels and in-person outreach. Social media can help engage voters, Bennett said, but it does not guarantee votes. She added that outreach must be accessible and meet people where they are. The city’s mayoral primary is scheduled for May 2027. Parker, Bennett’s former boss, has served in elected office for more than two decades.
