William Penn district halts Penn Wood sports as independent review begins
All middle and high school athletics in Penn Wood are paused while an independent investigator reviews the program’s culture and climate. The district has not specified what or whom the review concerns.
LANSDOWNE, Pa. — The William Penn School District has suspended all sporting activities at Penn Wood’s middle and high schools while an independent investigator examines the athletics program’s culture and climate.
The district said it commissioned the review after receiving information about an alleged incident. A letter to families did not identify the incident or say who may be involved. The district has not announced how long the pause will last.
In a statement, district officials acknowledged the suspension would disappoint students, families, coaches and supporters, and said athletics offers opportunities for connection, growth and teamwork. They said student safety is a priority and the district is seeking to maintain a safe, respectful environment.
Student athletes will have an opportunity to share their experiences in an upcoming survey, the district said. Families may also send feedback about positive experiences in Penn Wood athletics to communications@wpsd.k12.pa.us, which the district said will help identify what is working and what needs strengthening.
The suspension affects students at both the middle and high school levels, interrupting sports activities while the review proceeds.
