Bucks County charges New Jersey prosecutor after Discord investigation
Brian Fitzgerald, a New Jersey deputy attorney general who lives in Lower Makefield, is accused of using AI to create and share child sexual abuse material through Discord. He remained jailed Friday as the Bucks County case moved toward a preliminary hearing later this month.
A New Jersey deputy attorney general has been charged in Bucks County with possessing and disseminating child sexual abuse material after investigators traced an online tip to a Discord account they linked to his home in Lower Makefield, Pennsylvania.
Brian Fitzgerald, 51, was still in custody Friday, Oct. 16, unable to post 10% of his $2 million bail, according to the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing before a district judge on Oct. 27. The available information did not indicate whether he had hired a lawyer.
The investigation began earlier this year after the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children alerted authorities that a Discord account had uploaded the material in July, according to the arrest affidavit. Detectives linked the account to Fitzgerald and his residence on Edgewood Road, the affidavit says.
After executing a search warrant at the home Thursday, investigators recovered chat logs in which Fitzgerald allegedly acknowledged using artificial intelligence to generate the material, according to the affidavit. The account used the username “thegentlemanpervert_2160_07833,” investigators said.
Fitzgerald has worked for about 10 years as a New Jersey deputy attorney general, handling insurance fraud cases, according to his LinkedIn profile. He also serves on the state ethics board, which investigates allegations of misconduct by attorneys.
Bucks County District Attorney Joe Khan said his office would pursue the case “aggressively” and hold offenders accountable regardless of their profession or title. “No one is above the law, least of all someone entrusted with upholding it,” Khan said.
The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office said it was aware of Fitzgerald’s arrest and was cooperating with the Bucks County investigation. The office said it was taking “appropriate actions toward his employment.”
The charges are allegations, and Fitzgerald is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
