Voorhees police seek two drivers after cyclist Md Maksudur Rahman, 71, dies
Rahman was riding home from his job at the Harmony Diner when he was struck on Route 73 early Sunday, investigators say. Police are seeking a Ford Fusion and a dark-colored SUV whose drivers left the scene.
Voorhees investigators are looking for two drivers after 71-year-old Md Maksudur Rahman was fatally struck while cycling on Route 73 early Sunday.
Police were called about 1:17 a.m. to the 100 block of North Route 73, near Cooper Road, where Rahman was found unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Voorhees Police Department and Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.
Investigators say two vehicles struck Rahman and left without stopping: a dark gray or black 2017 or 2020 Ford Fusion and a dark-colored midsize SUV. No arrests had been made as of Monday afternoon, and the investigation remained ongoing.
Rahman’s son, Mahmudur Rahman, said his father had regularly biked to and from work for more than a decade. His pedal-assist bicycle had hazard lights at both the front and rear, he said.
Originally from Bangladesh, Rahman moved to the United States more than a decade ago and settled with his wife in Berlin in 2014, his son said. He worked as a dishwasher at Voorhees’ 24-hour Harmony Diner, which had become a second home to him.
“He was the greatest person I ever met in my life, always a smile on his face,” diner owner Serkhan Bagcivan said. He described Rahman as a hardworking person who was quick to help others.
Rahman is survived by his wife, son, daughter and six grandchildren, his son said. The family and investigators are asking witnesses or anyone with information to contact police.
