North Philadelphia water-line break leaves Clifford Street without service, closes Legion bar
A water-line break sent water through the pavement and across Clifford Street in North Philadelphia on Tuesday, disrupting service to nearby homes and flooding the basement of a local American Legion post. Residents said the flooding began around 10:30 a.m. near 25th Street. Philadelphia Water Department crews arrived at about 6 p.m., after neighbors had repeatedly called to report the problem, residents said. The cause of the break has not been confirmed. Some neighbors recalled seeing firefighters release water from a nearby hydrant shortly before water began pushing through the asphalt. There is no confirmed link between that activity and the break. The flooding reached the steps of the American Legion building and forced its bar to close. Earl Stanley, the post’s vice president, said fans and pumps were being used to remove water from the basement, but water was still coming in and cleanup could not fully begin. He said the post was losing income and had equipment in the basement that needed to dry out. The reopening date was uncertain. Nearby resident Muyang Morfaw said she noticed her home had lost running water about an hour or two after the flooding started. When she called the Water Department, she said, she was told there was construction and that another person had reported a leak. Residents said they remained without running water even after crews arrived. The Philadelphia Water Department and Fire Department had not provided information about the incident by the time of publication.
