Forsythe Farm’s future debated as West Goshen reviews demolition permits

Preservation advocates asked West Goshen officials to pause demolition of the roughly 200-year-old Forsythe Farm, which a judge previously cleared for demolition on safety grounds. The farm’s future has become a local dispute over history, development, environmental concerns and a nearby resident’s property rights.

Forsythe Farm’s future debated as West Goshen reviews demolition permits

WEST GOSHEN, Pa. — Preservation advocates and residents urged West Goshen Township officials Tuesday to halt plans to demolish Forsythe Farm, a more than 200-year-old property on Westtown Road, as the township reviews demolition permit applications.

A judge authorized demolition earlier this year, citing safety concerns and finding that rehabilitation was not possible. Advocates say demolition could erase a historic community asset; they contend the site could instead be preserved and used to recognize the area’s Quaker, abolitionist and civil rights history.

Stephen Lyons, president of Save Forsythe Farm, asked the township’s Board of Supervisors to pause a full demolition and bring the property owner, township and residents together to discuss alternatives. He said the buildings have been left to deteriorate for decades and argued that development is not the only possible future for the property.

The debate also affects neighbors. Mike Pease said a township right-of-way near his home could be used for a road crossing part of his driveway and front yard if demolition and later development proceed. He said the potential impact is upsetting, while recognizing that he would have to comply with the law.

Supporters have also raised concerns about effects on the environment and local wildlife. The potential housing development remains a concern voiced by opponents, though the property’s final use has not been settled.

The property’s court-appointed conservator, BDP Impact Real Estate, did not respond to a request for comment by Tuesday night. Save Forsythe Farm says demolition could be imminent and is continuing efforts to stop it. Neighbors and advocates say they hope township officials and the owner will consider a cooperative solution that accounts for both the site’s history and its future.
