Will Rogers airport plan targets 40-gate concourse and capacity for 20 million passengers
Oklahoma City airport officials unveiled a three-phase terminal plan intended to accommodate long-term growth, with a five-level parking structure and rideshare shelter among the first projects. The plan envisions expanding the concourse from its current configuration to as many as 40 gates.
Will Rogers International Airport is planning a major expansion of its parking, terminal and concourse facilities, with a long-term goal of being able to handle 20 million passengers a year.
Airport officials unveiled the three-phase “Cleared for Takeoff” plan Tuesday, Oct. 13. Airport Director Jeff Mulder said the airport currently serves a baseline of 4.6 million passengers annually. The plan, he said, is intended to increase capacity and improve the balance between ground-side facilities and terminal operations.
The first phase calls for a new five-level parking structure north of Garage C, a protective cover for the rideshare waiting area and demolition of Garage A.
In the second phase, the front of the terminal would be partially expanded on its west side, while the concourse would grow to accommodate 24 to 26 gates. That phase also includes completing a permanent, two-level roadway at the terminal curbside.
A third phase would further expand the terminal’s front and increase the concourse to 40 gates.
The plan comes as other airport work is underway, including terminal-flooring upgrades, infrastructure improvements at Terminal Drive and Amelia Earhart Drive, and restroom renovations. Officials described the expansion as a response to projected long-term growth and a way to support Oklahoma City’s connections to the wider economy.
