Oklahoma City renter says storage goods turned up in facility apartment

An Oklahoma City woman says most of her belongings had disappeared from a storage unit after the facility changed ownership, and that she later recognized some of the missing items inside an apartment on the property.

Kaitlynn Johnson rented a unit at Success Storage before the facility was taken over by CubeSmart. She said she did not realize the change had happened and initially mistook emails from CubeSmart about an invoice for spam because she did not recognize the company.

When Johnson went to retrieve her belongings, she said, the lease listed her unit as 122, although her unit was 431. After gaining access, she found less than a quarter of her possessions, according to her account.

Johnson said the current property manager let her look through an on-site apartment in an effort to locate the missing property. She said she recognized a dresser, bed frame, pillows, dishes and a 65-inch television there. She said she does not know how the items ended up in the apartment.

The former Success Storage property manager declined to discuss the matter when contacted, saying it was not a good time, and offered to respond by email. No email response was received. In a text to Johnson earlier that week, the former manager said they were frustrated by how the situation unfolded and by a lack of communication affecting tenants and the manager, who said they had been living at the property.

Johnson said she is trying to file an insurance claim but has been told it is unclear how the ownership change affects the process. She said she has continued making required payments and wants to recover her belongings, especially items her children need in their new home.

Success Storage and CubeSmart had not responded to requests for comment as of Oct. 24. A visit to the property to speak with the manager ended with a request to leave. The circumstances surrounding the missing possessions remain unclear.
