Mailing to Tennessee Elections Office Intercepted Amid Federal Probe

A suspicious package addressed to the Tennessee Division of Elections was intercepted before it reached its destination, Secretary of State Tre Hargett said Thursday, Oct. 15. The FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service are investigating the mailing as part of a series of suspicious letters sent to addresses across the country.

The FBI said the mailings went to locations including secretaries of state offices and related election offices. Some letters contained an unknown substance, the agency said, adding that it is working with law enforcement partners to respond to incidents and identify those responsible. Investigators have not released further details about the Tennessee package or the broader probe.

Reports have linked the investigation to mailings in at least 15 states, including Tennessee. Dozens of letters were reportedly sent, among them some addressed to Democratic senators.

The National Association of Secretaries of State and the National Association of State Election Directors said threats against election officials and workers have no place in a democracy. Election workers should not have to fear for their safety while carrying out their duties, the groups said, describing safe and secure elections as a shared responsibility.

The incident comes amid a history of threats involving election offices. In 2023, packages containing fentanyl were sent to state election offices; no arrests or charges were reported in that case. The current investigation underscores the security risks facing the public servants who administer elections and the need for agencies to protect both workers and voters.
