Tennessee election office says suspicious mail was intercepted before delivery
A package addressed to the Tennessee State Division of Elections was intercepted before it reached the office, Secretary of State Tre Hargett said Thursday. Officials have not disclosed what was inside or whether an investigation is underway.
A suspicious package addressed to Tennessee’s State Division of Elections was intercepted before it reached the office, Secretary of State Tre Hargett said Thursday, Oct. 15.
Hargett thanked the FBI and U.S. Postal Service for taking election-related threats seriously. He did not provide details about the package, including where or when it was intercepted, what prompted concern, or whether it contained anything dangerous.
It was not clear whether authorities are conducting a further investigation. The FBI had been contacted for additional information.
The interception comes amid other reported threats against Tennessee political figures. A Republican candidate for the state House said this week that she and her family had received a death threat. The circumstances of that threat and the package have not been linked publicly.
Early voting in Tennessee was underway, placing election offices and candidates at the center of heightened public attention. No disruption to election operations was reported in connection with the package.
