Driver in fatal Kenwood school-bus crash pleads not guilty to traffic charges

Sabrina Ducksworth, the driver of a Clarksville-Montgomery County school bus involved in a crash that killed two students, pleaded not guilty to two traffic charges during her first court appearance Monday, Oct. 26, in Carroll County.

Ducksworth told the court she could not afford an attorney, and a judge appointed a public defender. She is scheduled to return to court Nov. 16, unless the case is resolved before then.

The charges stem from the March 27 crash on Highway 70, as the bus was carrying 24 Kenwood Middle School students and four adults to a Greenpower USA grand prix event in Jackson. The bus crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a dump truck and an SUV. Students Zoe Davis and Arianna Pearson died at the scene.

Ducksworth was initially charged with vehicular homicide, failure to exercise due care and failure to maintain her lane. A Carroll County grand jury returned indictments on the two traffic violations but did not indict her on the vehicular homicide charge.

Parents who were following the bus reported that it swerved in and out of its lane during the trip. The cause of the crash remains unknown in the information presented in court. Ducksworth was seriously injured, and other bus passengers also suffered injuries. The National Transportation Safety Board said the dump-truck occupants sustained serious injuries; the SUV’s occupants were not hurt.

The students were traveling to compete in an event at Rockabillys Baseball Stadium with a car they had built as part of the school trip. The crash killed two children and injured students, school staff and people in the other vehicles.
