Wisconsin federal probe examines three feces-smeared mailings sent to Tiffany campaign

A federal affidavit says investigators collected DNA and fingerprints from two Kewaskum residents as they investigate three letters sent to a company handling donations for Tom Tiffany’s gubernatorial campaign. Neither person has been charged, and investigators have not publicly established who sent the mailings.

Wisconsin federal probe examines three feces-smeared mailings sent to Tiffany campaign
Federal investigators are seeking DNA and fingerprint evidence from two people who live at a Kewaskum property tied to three letters containing a substance believed to be feces and mailed to a company working for Tom Tiffany’s Wisconsin gubernatorial campaign, according to a search-warrant affidavit filed in federal court. Aspect Compliance, which collects and processes campaign donations, received the first letter July 20, the affidavit says. An employee told investigators she felt sick after opening the return envelope and encountering a brown substance that appeared and smelled like feces. Two more envelopes containing similarly smeared documents arrived July 27 and in early August. Handwritten messages on the mail included “OPEN! OPEN!,” “BIG MOOLA CHECK!” and “CABBAGE INSIDE,” according to the affidavit. A U.S. Postal Inspector traced the mailers to a Kewaskum home using codes printed on them. Tiffany’s campaign had sent fundraising mail to the address, which had originally been directed to someone who has since died. The affidavit says the deceased person’s son and a woman with the same last name were the only people receiving mail there. Investigators obtained DNA samples and fingerprints from both residents. The postal inspector wrote that they may have been involved individually or together in preparing and mailing the letters, and that DNA could potentially be recovered from the substance on them. That is an investigative assessment, not a finding that either person committed a crime. Neither has been charged. The affidavit lists the investigation under the federal law covering injurious articles sent through the mail, 18 U.S.C. § 1716. The two residents did not respond to requests for comment, according to the report. A Tiffany campaign spokesperson condemned the mailings, saying they forced postal workers to handle the material and that such conduct has no place regardless of political differences.
