NEW BERLIN, Wis. — New Berlin’s Common Council met behind closed doors with legal counsel Tuesday to discuss a resident’s petition seeking Mayor Dave Ament’s removal, but offered no public update before adjourning. The petition, filed Sept. 14, alleges Ament violated Wisconsin’s open meetings law and endorsed discriminatory and disparaging material. The council’s agenda said any action requiring council consideration would follow state law and applicable public-notice requirements. Residents attended the special meeting and waited for the council to return from closed session, which lasted about an hour. Some said they want Ament removed over anti-Muslim social media posts he had reposted. Ament apologized for the reposts at an Aug. 24 council meeting. “There is no place for anti-Semitism or Islamophobia or any kind of hate in society,” resident Muhammad Fareef said, urging the council to act. After the council emerged, members quickly adjourned. Alder John Hopkins said he did not know what the next step would be or when the issue might return to the council. New Berlin’s next regularly scheduled Common Council meeting is Oct. 13.
