Wisconsin awaits details after Trump announces $17.9 million for tornado recovery
MENASHA, Wis. — President Donald Trump said Wednesday that $17.9 million in federal disaster relief had been approved for Wisconsin following tornadoes that hit the Fox Valley earlier this summer, including Menasha. But Gov. Tony Evers’ office said it had received no information from the administration beyond Trump’s social media post. Evers requested a federal disaster declaration in August. A spokesperson for the governor said the state had “zero additional information” about the announcement and directed questions to Trump and U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, a Republican candidate for governor. Tiffany said Trump called him Wednesday to report that roughly $18 million in aid had been approved. He thanked the administration for responding to Wisconsin’s needs. The announcement did not include details about what the funding would cover, which communities or residents might qualify, or when assistance could become available. Those details matter to people and local governments assessing damage and recovery needs after the storms. Evers also questioned the announcement in a social media post. The state’s request for a declaration preceded Trump’s statement by several weeks.
