Racine County ex-deputy denies felony charges stemming from April turkey hunt shooting
RACINE, Wis. — James Lehman, a former Racine County sheriff’s deputy, pleaded not guilty Oct. 7 to four felony charges connected to an April hunting accident that wounded a father and his 7-year-old son. Two of the charges accuse Lehman of causing injury through the negligent use of a dangerous weapon. The criminal complaint alleges Lehman thought he saw a turkey and allowed his 3-year-old daughter to fire a shotgun. The blast struck two other hunters: the father in the back, torso, arm and hand, and the boy in the back and head. Both survived. Lehman told investigators he was not an experienced turkey hunter and did not have a hunter safety certificate, saying he believed his military service exempted him from the requirement, according to the complaint. He declined to comment as he left court. The Racine County Sheriff’s Office opened an internal investigation after the shooting. Lehman was placed on administrative leave and resigned Sept. 9, after more than seven years with the department, where he had worked as a corrections officer and later as a deputy. His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 1. The charges are allegations, and Lehman has pleaded not guilty.
