A newborn girl was safely surrendered Sunday afternoon at the Safe Haven Baby Box at Racine Fire Station 4, the Racine Fire Department said. The baby was assessed and cared for by on-duty firefighters and emergency medical personnel, and was found to be in good health. She is now in the custody of child protective services. The surrender was the second since the box went into service in December 2024. The first occurred in 2025. Wisconsin’s Safe Haven Law allows a parent to anonymously and legally surrender an unharmed newborn through an infant safety device or directly to an officer, emergency medical services practitioner or hospital staff member, without fear of prosecution under the law. The box provides a secure, climate-controlled place for a surrender. A monitoring system and silent alarm alert first responders when a baby is placed inside.
