Milwaukee tourism officials project World Series could generate $15 million

Milwaukee could see as much as $15 million in economic activity from the World Series, according to Visit Milwaukee, as the city prepares to host thousands of baseball fans and welcome a surge in business for hotels, restaurants and bars.

The tourism organization said it expects local hotels to be more than 90% full during the event. It is working with Tourism Economics to estimate the series’ financial impact, using major events including the Republican National Convention and the Milwaukee Bucks’ 2021 championship run as comparisons.

Visit Milwaukee has not yet estimated how many fans will travel to the city. It expects more than 40,000 people at American Family Field for each game, with additional crowds at bars, restaurants and watch parties. The organization said each Brewers playoff game has brought about $5 million to the city.

City officials, the Brewers, Visit Milwaukee and community organizations have started planning around both the visitor influx and public safety, said Josh Albercht, Visit Milwaukee’s chief marketing officer. The organization is also decorating downtown with the Brewers’ “Win Our Way” logos and distributing free posters.

The projected economic benefit remains an estimate, and the final impact will depend in part on how many visitors come and how long they stay. Visit Milwaukee said it is studying other World Series host cities as it prepares for the event.
