Milwaukee arts nonprofit marks 25 years with hands-on South Side celebration
MILWAUKEE — Residents took over a South Side block with paintbrushes, art materials and music Oct. 3 as Arts @ Large marked 25 years of expanding arts education in the city. The celebration took place at the nonprofit’s home in the historic Patrick Cudahy building, 1100 S. 5th St. Activities included painting sidewalks with tempera, trying watercolor and linocut, and visiting a mobile media lab equipped with a 3D printer. Attendees also contributed to a collaborative canvas. Lucky Diop led the Kassumai Youth Group in a drum performance during the event. Children and families painted together outside the Walker’s Point Community Center. Arts @ Large was founded in 2001 in response to shrinking opportunities for arts education in Milwaukee. It works with schools, educators and teaching artists, offering school partnerships, artist residencies and community programming. The organization says those efforts have reached thousands of Milwaukeeans. The anniversary celebration brought those programs into a public, hands-on setting, giving residents a chance to make art together while recognizing the nonprofit’s work to broaden access to creative learning across the city.
