MILWAUKEE — Janelle Jajtner has been named the first mayor of Milwaukee’s “Champagne of Beers” region after winning a citywide contest announced by Mayor Cavalier Johnson on Sept. 19. Jajtner was chosen from hundreds of entries in the competition. She said her connection to Milwaukee’s brewing history is personal: Her father worked at the brewery for more than 40 years. The honorary position does not replace Milwaukee’s elected mayor or carry governmental authority. Instead, it celebrates the city’s long association with beer and brewing. As part of the recognition, Jajtner will receive $2,000, two cases of Miller High Life, dinner at the Miller Caves and brewery-related merchandise. Milwaukee’s brewing identity has deep roots, but the industry has also faced major changes as large beverage companies consolidate operations and consumer tastes shift. The contest’s “Champagne of Beers” branding draws on Miller High Life’s long-running nickname and the city’s role in American beer culture.
