Lions Edge Dolphins 19-9 as Miami's Mistakes Mount
Detroit won its fourth straight game behind Jahmyr Gibbs' touchdown and four Jake Bates field goals, while Miami's 11 penalties and red-zone failures kept the rebuilding Dolphins winless at home.
The Detroit Lions extended their winning streak to four games Sunday with a 19-9 victory over the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium, leaning on Jahmyr Gibbs' rushing touchdown and four field goals from Jake Bates.
Detroit's top-ranked offense entered the day averaging 29 points and 395.4 yards per game but managed just 271 yards against a persistent Miami pass rush. Jared Goff completed 17 of 25 passes for 170 yards and was sacked three times. Rookie cornerback Chris Johnson intercepted Goff on a tipped pass in the first quarter, only the second pick Goff has thrown this season.
Gibbs finished with 74 yards on 20 carries, averaging 3.7 yards per attempt, and scored on an 8-yard run that put Detroit ahead 16-6 entering the fourth quarter. All-Pro receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown added 86 yards receiving as the Lions try to keep pace in a competitive NFC North.
Bates converted kicks of 28, 33, 40 and 43 yards, the last giving Detroit a 10-point cushion with 4:28 remaining. The Lions never trailed but could not pull away from a Miami team that had played four consecutive one-score games.
The decisive sequence came late in the third quarter with Detroit leading 9-6. Goff connected with Jameson Williams for a 31-yard gain, the Lions' longest play of the day, setting up Gibbs' fourth-down touchdown run, his 11th scrimmage touchdown of the season. Miami answered with an aggressive fake punt that gave the Dolphins the ball at Detroit's 18 and led to a 34-yard field goal by Zane Gonzalez.
Miami's Malik Willis completed 13 of 25 passes for 128 yards and an interception while under constant pressure from Detroit's defensive front. The Dolphins went 0 for 3 in the red zone and failed to reach 100 yards rushing for the second straight game. They were flagged 11 times, missed a field goal and had a kickoff fall short of the landing zone.
Dolphins punter Bradley Pinion completed a 46-yard pass to Kaytron Allen on a fourth-quarter fake punt. Detroit's Jack Fox also executed a fake in the second quarter, tossing an 11-yard pass to Tay Martin to set up the Lions at the 41, though Miami's defense held and sacked Goff on third down to force a punt.
Detroit players arrived wearing No. 46 jerseys to honor All-Pro linebacker Jack Campbell, who was placed on injured reserve this week after being hospitalized with a neck injury suffered in last Sunday's win over Minnesota. Campbell's jersey hung in his locker, and some fans held signs reading "Campbell Strong."
Dolphins tight end Will Kacmarek left in the third quarter with a quad injury after a low hit. He remained down for several minutes before walking to the sideline unassisted.
The Lions travel to Munich next Sunday to face New England. The Dolphins visit Indianapolis.
