Miami-Dade ties film grant to local hiring and spending for ‘Miami Vice ’85’

Miami-Dade commissioners approved a resolution Tuesday authorizing negotiations on a $1.02 million grant for “Miami Vice ’85,” a new film planned for release in 2028.

The county’s Office of Film and Entertainment will negotiate the agreement with the production. The money is conditional: the production must spend at least $10 million in Miami-Dade and ensure county residents make up at least 30% of the below-the-line crew working on the local portion of the project.

The production must also use local businesses for at least half of its vendors and contractors engaged for the county work, or spend at least $5 million in qualifying purchases with local businesses. It will need to submit an acceptable independent compliance audit as well.

The conditions link the public incentive to local economic activity, including jobs and contracts for county residents and businesses. The resolution authorizes negotiations; the production must meet the requirements to receive the funding.

“Miami Vice ’85” will star Austin Butler as James “Sonny” Crockett and Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo Tubbs. Joseph Kosinski is directing. The original NBC series debuted in 1984 and ran for five seasons. A previous film adaptation, starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, was released in 2006.
