Deerfield Beach crash suspect’s bond remains $150,000 after hearing
A Broward judge kept Jean Claude Saint Cyr’s bond at $150,000 as he faces charges stemming from a crash that killed his wife and injured two others. Prosecutors say surveillance video showed him driving as fast as 102 mph in a 30 mph zone before the collision.
A judge on Tuesday kept Jean Claude Saint Cyr’s bond at $150,000 in a case stemming from a May crash in a Deerfield Beach neighborhood that killed his wife and injured two other people.
Prosecutor Ross Weiner told the court that surveillance video recorded before the collision showed Saint Cyr driving between 98 and 102 mph in a 30 mph zone. The crash happened May 26, according to the date given in an earlier report about the collision.
The state asked for $190,000 in bond. Defense attorney Shlomi Presser argued for a lower amount, saying Saint Cyr’s family could afford less and that his client had voluntarily surrendered on Oct. 19 after charges were filed.
“Clearly my client is not a flight risk,” Presser said, pointing to the surrender as evidence Saint Cyr would return for future court proceedings.
As Saint Cyr’s family considered raising money to post bond, Broward Judge Allison Gilman spoke to his son about the financial burden. She noted that even if the bond were cut in half, a bondsman would receive $7,000. Presser said the family was prepared to sell what it owned to secure Saint Cyr’s release.
Gilman asked Saint Cyr whether he wanted his family to mortgage its homes to get him out of jail. He said yes. The judge then left the bond at $150,000.
Saint Cyr remains accused in the fatal crash; the allegations have not been proven in court.
