Medley repair-shop owner dies after shooting; 81-year-old Hialeah man arrested

The owner of a Medley machinery repair shop died after being shot Wednesday morning, and an 81-year-old Hialeah man has been arrested in the case, police say.

Officers responded around 7:28 a.m. to Metro Express, near Northwest 109th Street and Northwest South River Drive. The victim’s name has not been released.

According to an arrest report, the owner had learned weeks earlier that Jose Antonio Lopez, who worked at the shop, was sleeping there without permission. When the owner arrived Wednesday and found Lopez still at the business, he told him to leave.

Police allege Lopez took a .40-caliber handgun from a nearby shelf and shot the owner in the chest. The owner tried to walk away but collapsed at the shop entrance. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported him to a landing zone so he could be flown to a hospital, where he died.

A witness called 911. Police say Lopez went outside to smoke and rode a tricycle around the parking lot while waiting for officers. When they arrived, Lopez told them, “I did it,” according to the report. He later allegedly admitted shooting the owner and said he was fed up with the victim insulting him and complaining.

Authorities searched the property and found two firearms, a spent casing and a projectile, according to the report. Lopez was taken to a hospital after complaining of chest pains, then booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. He faces a charge of second-degree murder.
