MIAMI — Harry Cossyphas, a South Florida high school senior known as the “Spider-Man of Brickell,” was among 11 students honored by the Miami Police Department on Friday for helping stop a suspected jewelry thief.

Police said Cossyphas stepped in during an August incident in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood, where a man was accused of stealing jewelry from a woman. The teenager held the suspect down while waiting for officers to arrive, according to police.

During the confrontation, Cossyphas was pepper-sprayed and temporarily blinded. He continued restraining the suspect until officers reached the scene, police said.

The department recognized Cossyphas and the other students at its “Do the Right Thing” ceremony. Police did not provide further details about the alleged theft or the suspect in the information released about the recognition.
