King tides and strong winds cause beach scarping at Dania Beach park

DANIA BEACH, Fla. — Strong winds and king tides are contributing to beach erosion along South Florida’s coast, with cliff-like cuts forming in the sand at Mizell-Johnson State Park in Dania Beach.

Double-red flags were flying at the beach Monday, Oct. 26, indicating that the water was closed. Few people visited amid the rough conditions, though some surfers entered the choppy water, despite the danger.

King tides were expected to remain a concern through the rest of the week. The combination of elevated tides and powerful winds has begun to affect several stretches of beach, according to observations from the shoreline.

The erosion and dangerous surf are an immediate reminder for beachgoers to heed water-closure flags and avoid entering rough water.
