Homecoming-night shooting near FAMU leaves 12 injured, including six children
A shooting near Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee injured 12 people during Florida A&M’s homecoming festivities Saturday night. Police said a fight may have come before the gunfire; no arrests had been announced.
Twelve people were injured in a shooting near Florida A&M University’s Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee on Saturday night, during the university’s homecoming celebrations. Six of the injured were younger than 18, police said.
The Tallahassee Police Department said 11 people were wounded by gunfire. Three victims had serious injuries, while the others had been stabilized, according to the department. Police did not specify how the 12th person was injured.
The shooting was reported around 8 p.m. at an intersection next to the stadium. Earlier that evening, FAMU’s Rattlers played the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions in the historically Black university’s annual homecoming football game.
Police said preliminary findings suggest a physical fight took place before the shooting. No arrests had been reported, and the investigation was continuing. Police asked witnesses to provide information.
FAMU urged members of its campus community to avoid the area after the shooting, while saying the campus remained safe. Florida State University, about a mile away, also issued an alert advising people in the Tallahassee area to stay indoors as a precaution. FSU said there was no indication that members of its community were involved.
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell expressed sympathy for those hurt and their families, saying it was particularly painful that children were among the injured.
