King tides put Broward, Miami-Dade coasts and Upper Keys under flood alerts

Seasonally high tides, onshore winds and intermittent downpours are expected to bring coastal and street flooding to parts of South Florida through Monday. Officials warn residents not to drive through flooded roads.

King tides put Broward, Miami-Dade coasts and Upper Keys under flood alerts

South Florida’s highest tides of the year are returning, prompting coastal flood alerts for Broward and Miami-Dade counties and the Upper Keys as high water combines with onshore winds and rain.

A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for coastal Broward and Miami-Dade, while a Coastal Flood Warning covers the Upper Keys. Moderate to major flooding is possible into Monday as winds strengthen and periods of rain move across the region, according to the forecast issued Saturday, Oct. 24.

Water may briefly spill onto low-lying roads, driveways and sidewalks near the shore, particularly around morning and evening high tides. The highest water levels can occur about one to two hours before and after high tide. Saltwater backing up through storm drains may also make it harder for rainwater to drain from streets.

These seasonal “king tides” occur in spring and fall when the Earth, Sun and Moon align in a way that produces higher-than-usual tides. Onshore winds can push additional water toward the coast, increasing the risk of flooding.

Residents should avoid driving through flooded streets: water can be deeper than it appears and may disable or damage a vehicle.
