Fort Lauderdale crash sends car into home on Northwest Third Avenue; woman hospitalized

A woman was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening after a two-vehicle crash Sunday sent a car off the road and into a home in the 1300 block of Northwest Third Avenue, Fort Lauderdale police said.

Police said one vehicle left the roadway after being struck and hit a tree near the home. The crash also damaged the house, leaving a hole in its side, according to video from the scene. Both cars had substantial front-end damage.

Breanna Vanderplow, who lives in a home across from the crash site, said the impact was frightening. She has lived in the area for five years and said cars have crashed across the street twice during that time. She said speeding has become a concern for residents.

Joe Fuentes, the owner of the damaged property, said this is the second time he has had to repair the house after a crash. He said he wants to ensure the structure is safe for his tenants and called for more speed-limit enforcement, describing the street as feeling like a freeway.

Police have not released what caused the collision. The extent of the home’s damage was described as minor.
