Coral Springs synagogue menorah knocked down in alleged shopping-cart attack
Police say a California man rammed a shopping cart into a menorah outside Chabad of Coral Springs, knocking it over. He faces charges including criminal mischief and resisting an officer and has since been released on bond.
A 44-year-old California man was arrested after allegedly knocking over a menorah outside Chabad of Coral Springs with a shopping cart, Coral Springs police said. The menorah stood outside the synagogue on North University Drive.
Police identified the man as Matthew John Ryan. Rabbi Moshe Yaras said congregants walking to Saturday morning services saw the incident and tried to stop him. A synagogue security guard called police.
Officers found Ryan about half a mile away, still pushing the cart, which had a dog inside, according to an arrest form. Police said they drew a Taser and ordered him to the ground. Ryan said he had done nothing and claimed he was in a production movie, the form states. He also said his blood sugar was high and asked for emergency medical help. After being taken to a hospital and medically cleared, he was booked into Broward County Main Jail.
Ryan faces charges including criminal mischief and resisting an officer. The arrest form says Walmart also plans to pursue a case over the cart. Ryan has since posted bond. The listed charges are allegations; the provided records do not state a motive for the damage.
Yaras said hundreds of people attend Saturday services at the synagogue and called for responding to the incident with acts of kindness. “Whenever we face any negative experience, we add in acts of kindness, goodness in the Jewish community, outside of the Jewish community, to drown out the darkness and negativity in the world,” he said.
