Brownsville woman held without bond after man suffers burns over most of his body
A Miami-Dade judge denied bond for Tanisha Shelton, charged in connection with a fire attack that left 33-year-old Nathaniel Devon Mathis in critical condition. Deputies found Mathis unconscious near Northwest 63rd Street and 25th Avenue; an arrest report says the two had argued earlier that day.
A judge denied bond Monday for a 45-year-old woman accused of setting a man on fire in Brownsville, after he was hospitalized with burns covering at least 80% of his body, authorities said.
Tanisha Shelton faces charges of attempted murder and arson causing great bodily harm. The victim, 33-year-old Nathaniel Devon Mathis, remained in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital. An arrest report said he was not expected to survive.
Miami-Dade sheriff’s deputies went to the area of Northwest 63rd Street and 25th Avenue after receiving reports that someone had been set on fire. They found Mathis unconscious and burned, according to the sheriff’s office.
The arrest report says Shelton and Mathis had a verbal dispute earlier in the day, during which Shelton said she would leave and find someone to hurt him. She returned a few hours later carrying a white plastic bucket, the report says. A witness told deputies Shelton asked to borrow a lighter before approaching Mathis, dousing him with an accelerant and setting him alight.
Deputies arrested Shelton after a witness provided a description of the suspect, according to the report. The investigation remains active.
