Another debate in Wisconsin’s 2026 governor’s race has been canceled after Republican candidate Tom Tiffany declined to take part in more than one debate before the Nov. 3 election. The forum was to be held at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and jointly sponsored by the Milwaukee County Intergovernmental Cooperation Council, TMJ4 and UW-Milwaukee. The organizations said they were disappointed that they could not finalize plans and expressed hope that the next governor would make local government a major priority. According to TMJ4 reporter Charles Benson, Tiffany’s campaign indicated that the congressman would participate in only one debate. David Crowley, the Democratic Milwaukee County executive, was unavailable for the date initially proposed by TMJ4, but his campaign was interested in finding another date. The cancellation follows the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association’s decision two weeks earlier to scrap its own proposed governor’s debate after Tiffany declined to participate. The association has hosted gubernatorial debates since 1990. Tiffany told conservative radio host Dan O’Donnell that he believed one debate would provide enough time to discuss the major issues in the campaign. He also cited negotiations and scheduling demands in explaining his decision. Crowley’s campaign manager, Garren Randolph, said Crowley had been prepared to participate. Randolph accused Tiffany of avoiding additional questions from voters about his positions on military spending, tariffs and their effects on Wisconsin households, farmers and manufacturers. The campaigns have one debate currently scheduled. WISN-12 plans to host Tiffany and Crowley on Oct. 21, with reporters Matt Smith and Gerron Jordan moderating. Topics are expected to include the cost of living, taxes, immigration enforcement, data centers and election security. The debate cancellations leave voters with fewer opportunities to compare the candidates publicly, particularly on issues affecting Milwaukee County and other local governments. Tiffany represents Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House, while Crowley leads the state’s largest county by population.
