WAUSAU, Wis. — Rep. Tom Tiffany and pilot Leonard Boltz were approaching Wausau Downtown Airport Saturday night when the aircraft suffered an engine failure over Lake Wausau, according to records obtained by authorities. The emergency landing was reported at about 8:50 p.m. The men were flying in a Beechcraft K3 when the mechanical problem occurred, records indicate. Boltz told first responders that the plane’s engine failed while the aircraft was over the lake. After the plane landed in the water, Tiffany and Boltz were able to get out on their own and call 911. They swam to a shallow area, where Wausau Fire Department personnel rescued them. Both were taken to Aspirus Wausau Hospital and treated for minor injuries. The aircraft was later recovered from the lake. The incident involved Tiffany, a Republican who represents Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District, but the available records describe the event as an aviation emergency caused by a mechanical failure. They do not indicate that either man was seriously injured.
