Boxing trainer Marcus Robert Johnson enters Madison’s 2027 mayoral race
Marcus Robert Johnson, a former Golden Gloves boxer and East Side bartender, says he is running for mayor, promising to elevate the role of ordinary residents. He joins a crowded field seeking to challenge incumbent Satya Rhodes-Conway.
Marcus Robert Johnson, a boxing trainer and former bartender at the Harmony Bar, has launched a campaign for Madison mayor, joining a growing field of candidates in the 2027 race against incumbent Satya Rhodes-Conway.
Johnson represented Wisconsin in a Golden Gloves of America tournament. In a social media post announcing his campaign, he said ordinary residents should have a greater voice in the city’s future and called for restoring integrity in city government.
“We are the owners and shareholders of this city,” Johnson wrote, arguing that residents can work together to improve their lives.
The Madison City Clerk’s list of candidates who have filed campaign paperwork includes Johnson and other contenders: former Dane County Board Supervisor April Kigeya; One City Schools founder and CEO Kaleem Caire; former Madison Common Council members Syed Abbas and Brian Benford; Monkey Bar Gym founder Jonny Hinds; and food service director Larry Williams.
The mayoral primary is scheduled for Feb. 16, 2027, with the general election set for April 6. The contest will determine who leads the city as residents weigh local priorities and the direction of municipal government.
