Wisconsin survivors can now submit some restraining-order petitions online
A statewide court portal lets people seeking temporary protection for domestic abuse or harassment prepare and file petitions without first going to a courthouse for forms. The system does not yet cover petitions involving child abuse or people at risk.
MADISON, Wis. — People seeking temporary restraining orders for domestic abuse or harassment can now prepare and submit petitions online through a new Wisconsin Court System portal launched statewide in September.
The Restraining Order Portal guides users through setting up an eFiling account, finding the required court forms and sending them to the appropriate circuit court. It can be used on a computer, phone or other mobile device.
Previously, petitioners had to go to a courthouse to obtain the forms. The online process is intended to remove that initial trip, which court officials say can make seeking protection more accessible during an urgent and difficult time.
“The Wisconsin Court System stands ready to help those in need,” Chief Justice Jill J. Karofsky said. She said filing for an order takes courage and the courts want to make the process as easy as possible for people seeking protection.
Eight counties, including Dane, Adams and Sauk, tested the portal earlier this summer. The court system said 72 petitions were filed through it during the pilot.
For now, the portal covers temporary restraining-order petitions involving domestic abuse and harassment. It does not handle petitions related to child abuse or individuals at risk. The court system highlighted the service as Domestic Violence Awareness Month began Oct. 1.
