UW–Madison lab worker gets time served after guilty plea in drink-tampering case
A 42-year-old University of Wisconsin–Madison lab worker was sentenced to time served Tuesday after pleading guilty in a case involving a coworker’s water bottle, according to online court records. Makoto Kuroda pleaded guilty to placing foreign objects in edibles. He had previously pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree recklessly endangering safety and tampering with products. The criminal complaint said a worker at UW–Madison’s Influenza Research Institute noticed an unusual smell and taste coming from his water bottle on April 4. He also reported strange odors from his shoes and a grocery bag. Testing found a high level of chloroform in the bottle, the complaint said. According to the complaint, Kuroda later told the coworker, “I did it.” The complaint said Kuroda cited the coworker’s alleged failure to follow lab rules requiring a lab coat and goggles, as well as resentment that the coworker had been promoted while Kuroda had not. The guilty plea and sentence resolve the criminal case against Kuroda. The court records cited in the report list the sentence as time served.
