South Wayne residents told to boil tap water after Sunday pressure loss

A pressure drop in South Wayne’s water system prompted a boil-water advisory after affecting at least a quarter of the distribution network. Residents should boil water for drinking and food preparation until testing confirms it is safe and the village lifts the advisory.

South Wayne residents told to boil tap water after Sunday pressure loss

SOUTH WAYNE, Wis. — Residents of South Wayne are being told to boil tap water before using it for drinking, cooking, food preparation or brushing their teeth after the village water system lost pressure Sunday, Oct. 25.

Village President Debra Meythaler said the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources was notified that the pressure loss affected at least 25% of the distribution system or an entire pressure zone. A loss of pressure can allow bacteria to enter the water supply, officials said.

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office advised residents to bring tap water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, preparing food or brushing teeth. Residents should avoid using unboiled village water for those purposes, dishwashing or personal-hygiene activities where water could enter the body.

The DNR also urged caution when washing hands, showering and bathing. South Wayne is working with the agency on water testing.

The advisory will remain in effect until testing confirms the water is safe and the village announces that the restriction has been lifted.
