The event was the first Brooke’s Birthday Bash, organized by Brooke’s Brigade, a nonprofit founded after Elfers died by suicide. Her mother, Julie Elfers, is the organization’s president and co-founder.

Brooke’s Brigade gives care packages to teenagers who may be struggling. The boxes include mental health resources, encouraging notes and small items such as fidget toys and rubber ducks, intended to remind young people they are cared for and that help is available.

The fundraiser included bowling, food and other activities. Elfers said the group hopes gatherings like it can help teenagers feel more comfortable discussing mental health and asking for support. “There’s nothing to be ashamed of,” she said.

For the family, the event also offered a chance to celebrate Brooke and build connections with others. Elfers said her family found, after their loss, that many people around them were struggling in ways they had not known. She emphasized that support can begin with listening, even when someone does not have a solution.

Her message to teenagers: “Please talk to someone.” She added that support can come from people who are not therapists, too.

People experiencing a mental health crisis or emotional distress can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available 24 hours a day.
