Madison residents have until Oct. 12 to weigh in on Lakeway art proposals
MADISON, Wis. — Residents can weigh in through Oct. 12 on four proposals for a public art installation planned for the first phase of Madison’s Lakeway project, which aims to connect the city more closely with its waterfront. The proposals were chosen from 79 concepts submitted in response to an international call for artists. The selected artists visited Madison to learn about the community and the project, and city officials are asking residents to review their designs through a survey on the city’s website. The Lakeway project is intended to create a place where residents and visitors can engage with Madison’s lakes, community and public art. Jayme Powers, who spoke about the project, said art can help bring people to the water and connect them with one another. Karin Wolf described the commission as a rare opportunity to bring a high-caliber artist to Madison for what could become an iconic work. The selection committee is considering how well each proposal reflects Madison, responds to the waterfront location and can be built. It is expected to recommend a winning design on Oct. 19. The recommendation would not, by itself, authorize construction; the project still needs additional approvals.
