MADISON, Wis. — Highland Avenue will close at the railroad crossing between Campus Drive and the VA driveway starting at 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, while Wisconsin & Southern Railroad crews replace the deteriorating crossing. The city expects the street to reopen by 5 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14.
Work is scheduled during regular daytime hours through the weekend. The closure will also block both sidewalks across the tracks. Pedestrians will be directed to Walnut Street via the bike path and University Avenue.
The Campus Drive entrance and exit ramps will remain open, as will the bike path immediately north of the tracks. Temporary traffic changes include a southbound U-turn on Highland at the VA driveway and altered lane assignments at Highland Avenue and Observatory Drive.
Eastbound drivers will be directed to Walnut Street, while westbound traffic will be detoured to University Bay Drive. City staff will monitor traffic cameras and adjust signal timing if needed. Travelers should allow extra time and follow posted detour signs.
