Madison police oversight investigations on hold after monitor’s removal

Madison’s civilian oversight board says investigations will pause until the city hires a permanent independent police monitor. Board Chair Devon Snyder says transition planning is underway to keep the office accessible to residents.

Madison police oversight investigations on hold after monitor’s removal

MADISON, Wis. — Investigations by Madison’s Office of the Independent Monitor will be paused until the city hires a permanent monitor, the chair of the city’s civilian police oversight board said Wednesday.

The Common Council’s removal of Aeiramique Glass from the position has left the future of the city’s civilian oversight system uncertain, said Devon Snyder, chair of the Madison Police Civilian Oversight Board.

“Since the council’s action, my priority has been ensuring that the Office of the Independent Monitor remains operational, accessible and responsive to the community,” Snyder said.

Snyder said he is working with Common Council Chief of Staff Karen Kapusta-Pofahl on transition planning. The aim, he said, is to ensure residents still have a place to raise concerns and file complaints while the city moves toward hiring a permanent monitor.

The investigation pause leaves a gap in the office’s work during the transition. The city has not announced in the information available when a permanent monitor will be hired.
