Five-vehicle wreck closes part of Madison’s US 51; driver seriously hurt

A five-vehicle crash at S. Stoughton Road and Pflaum Road injured several people and temporarily closed part of US Highway 51 in Madison on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 14, according to the Madison Fire Department.

The department said the crash occurred before 2:30 p.m. Witnesses and people involved told firefighters that a red sedan left the road, went airborne and rolled before stopping on its roof against two other vehicles.

Firefighters put out smoke coming from the sedan. Bystanders helped two people get out of the vehicle, the department said. Paramedics took the sedan’s driver to a hospital with serious injuries and transported a passenger for treatment.

Emergency medical personnel also assessed two other drivers. One reported minor injuries and went to an emergency room for further care; the other declined additional treatment, according to the department.

All lanes reopened shortly after 3:45 p.m. The closure affected US 51 between the Pflaum Road/North Stoughton Road area and Buckeye Road. Madison Fire said the traffic signals at the intersection were not working.
