MADISON — The Dane County Sheriff’s Office is warning families about a scam in which callers use public jail-booking information to pose as law enforcement officials and demand bail money. Three people have reported being contacted during the past three weeks after loved ones were booked into the Dane County Jail, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Because booking records are public, scammers can obtain names, arrest information and other details that make their calls sound credible. Sheriff Kalvin Barrett said callers may use real names associated with the Sheriff’s Office and can manipulate caller identification so a phone appears to be calling from the agency. “The Dane County Sheriff’s Office will never call and ask for money,” Barrett said. He added that the office will not direct people to pay through a wire transfer, cryptocurrency or gift cards purchased at a store. People who receive such a call should hang up and contact local law enforcement through an independently verified phone number. Families should not rely on the caller’s number or provide financial or personal information during an unexpected demand for payment. The Sheriff’s Office said bail payments can be made only in person at the Dane County Jail, 115 W. Doty St. in Madison. Officials are urging anyone who encounters the scam to report it so investigators can identify additional victims and prevent further losses.
